Top Ten Books I'm Excited To Read in 2012

1) Fear by Michael Grant (4/03)

You've probably already heard me gush about how much I love the Gone series so it should be no surprise that this one is numero uno on my list. I needed to know what happens yesterday.

2) BZRK by Michael Grant (2/28)

This one is supposed to be really creepy. Plus it’s by Michael Grant, say no more. 

3) Unwholly by Neal Shusterman (9/25)

The long awaited sequel to the best-selling Unwind. I love Neal Shusterman’s books, and I can’t wait for this next one. *no cover yet

4) Spark by Amy Kathleen Ryan (7/17)

I loved Glow when I read it last January and the cliffhanger ending definitely left me wanting more. Ugh, why can't all these books be out NOW!

5) The Other Life by Suzanne Winnacker (2/01)

This one’s about a family in LA who comes out after years in a bunker to find a devastated, and completely changed world. I’m really excited for this one.  

6) Struck by Jennifer Bosworth (5/08)

A post-apocalyptic novel about a girl who’s addicted to lighting? Of course I’m interested.  

7) The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe (1/24)

I love me some post-apocalyptic fiction about deadly plagues, so this one really sparked my interest. Thankfully I won't have to wait long to read this one as I have an ARC in waiting on my desk. 

8) Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver (2/28)

I gave 4 stars to Delirium (my review’s found here) and I’m really excited to see if this sequel can live up to the original. I'm lucky enough to have an ARC of this one as well. 

9) Above by Leah Bobet (4/01)

I’ve been hearing really good things about this one, and the is super awesome. Can’t wait to read it.

10) Bitterblue by Kristen Kashore (5/01)

And last but definitely not least the very long awaited Bitterblue, sequel to Graceling and Fire, is coming out this May.

This week's Top Ten is...

Top Ten Childhood Favorites

1) Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit

One of my absolute favorite books of all time. When I first read the audio book, I reread it at least 3 times after. It was also the first book that moved me to tears. 

2) Junie B. Jones series by Barbra Park

I loved this series when I was in the first and second grade. My favorites were Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus, Junie B. Jones and the Yucky Blucky Fruitcake, and Junie B. Jones and Her Big Fat Mouth.

3) Amelia's Notebook series by Marissa Moss

I always thought these books were so cool. They were written as though they really were some girls journal. Full of hand drawn illustrations, and lots of funny stories.

4) Magic Tree House series by Mary Osborne Pope When I was in elementary school, I'd had a fascination with ancient Egypt and mummies.  So, of course, the first one I'd ever read was Mummies in the Morning. I also really liked Night of the Ninjas.

5) Sweet Valley Kids: A Curse on Elizabeth, and Trapped in Toyland by Francine Pascal

I probably read almost all of the Sweet Valley Kids books in about 3rd or 4th grade. The ones I read again and again were A Curse on Elizabeth and Trapped in Toyland. 

6) Nate the Great series by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat

These were pretty short chapter books about a kid detective in San Francisco, solving mysteries in his neighborhood. My favorite was The Case of the Fleeing Fang. 

7) The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner

I loved The Boxcar Children. The whole idea of kids surviving on their own in the wilderness really appealed to me. I didn't even read any other books in the series because it wasn't about survival, they were solving mysteries. (Didn't make sense then, doesn't make sense now.) 

8) Goosebumps series by R.L. Stein

I read every Goosebumps book my library had. The only one that ever gave me nightmares though, was Night of the Living Dummy. Some of my Favorites were One Day at Horrorland, The Cuckoo Clock of Doom, How I Got My Shrunken Head, It Came From Beneath the Sink, and Welcome to Camp Nightmare. 

9) Amelia Bedelia series by Peggy Parish

The classic stories of the house keeper that takes instructions too literally and bakes a mean pie. Anyone who said they didn't laugh reading Amelia Bedelia stories are lying to you. 

10) Frog and Toad series by Arnold Lobel

The, also, classic stories of two best friends that may not always get along but always have lots of fun.

This week's Top Ten is...

Ten Books That I Read That Were Outside Of My Comfort Zone (or Firsts)

1) Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma
This one is about incest. It's probably outside of most peoples comfort zones. To this day, I'm not sure if I liked it or not. 








2) Give a Boy a Gun by Todd Strasser
I read this book when I was twelve. It was the first I'd ever heard of school shootings like Columbine. It also made me a big Todd Strasser fan. I would recommend that everyone read this book.

3) Wings by Aprilynne Pike
This one was out of my comfort zone because it was described as a "kissing book" by the author. I read it because I'd met the author at a book signing, and she was very funny. I thought that would transfer to her writing. Unfortunately, the book ended up being not only a meet-cute but involved a love triangle, two of my least favorite things. It was not meant to be.

4) Glass Houses by Rachel Caine
I had been hesitant to read this one, pretty much because it has vampires in it. I hadn't read any vampire stories since the "Twilight Enlightenment". I ended up really liking this one. The Morganville Vampires made vampires scary, not sparkly, again. 

5) Keeping You a Secret by Julie Anne Peters
The first LGBTQ book I'd ever read. I was thirteen when I read it.  Until I read this book, I didn't understand what "gay" was. This book lead me to understanding my own sexuality. Helped me realize that not only wasn't there anything wrong with being gay, but that there wasn't anything wrong with me. It is a very important book to me.

6) Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard
This book was definitely out of my comfort zone. I usually try to stay away from anything out right chick lit-y, or that has a TV show on ABC Family. I ended up pleasantly surprised. Except for all the fashion talk, cheating, and sleeping with way too old men, I like this series. (And the show.)

7) Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction by David Sheff
This was the first autobiography, or book about drug use I'd ever read. It is still one of my favorite books. 

8) Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr
The first faerie book I'd ever read. The first in the series isn't my favorite, but I do give this series a thumbs up.

9) Beautiful Demons by Sarra Cannon
The first self-published novel I've read. It ended up pretty good. 

10) The Sisters Club by Megan McDonald
This was the first YA book I'd ever read. I think I read it when I was ten. I'd wondered unknowingly into the teen section and picked it up because it had a sock monkey on the cover. I wasn't the best book ever, but it was okay. A little too chick lit-y.

Top Ten Books To Read During Halloween

1) Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman

A good, creepy novel about a demented amusement park. Written by the genius behind the Everlost trilogy. 

2) Coraline by Neil Gaimen

This is by far the creepiest book I've ever read. And just so you know my opinion, the movie was fine but can't even begin to compare to how creepy the book is. Coraline is one of my all time favorite books period. It's definitely a great Halloween read. 

3) Beautiful Demons by Sarra Cannon

This spooky tale is written by a self published author. One of the first ebooks I ever read. It didn't disappoint. 

4) The Shinning and Pet Sematary by Stephen King

Both Stephen King classics. Be sure to also check out the Pet Semetary movie, it was directed by the King of horror himself. 

5) Devilish by Maureen Johnson

Another good book about demons and the like. 

6) Bliss by Lauren Myracle

This one has some pretty creepy moments. You can tell from the bloody cover. 

7) Cell by Stephen King

This is a great zombie book. It'll make you scared to use your cell phone ever again. 

 

8) Lost Boys by Orson Scott Card

I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't say much except some creepy stuff happens. Vague, I know. 

9) The Boy Who Couldn't Die and Hell Phone by William Sleator

The Boy Who Couldn't Die pretty much explains itself. Hell phone has got the demon, visiting hell thing going on.

10) Raven's Gate by Anthony Horowitz

This is also a very creepy book. It's the start of a very good series. I don't want to give too much away, so it's about an orphaned boy that is sent to live in a very weird town. There's something very wrong with all the towns inhabitants and the way they act. 

11) Burnout by Adrienne Maria Vrettos

This one takes place on the day after Halloween. Ready for the plug? I'll be posting the review for this one tomorrow.

Top Ten Tuesday (#3)

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

This week's top ten is Top Ten Books That Whose Titles Or Covers Made Me Read It

(The following books are numbered in no particular order, I'm not playing favorites :)

1) The Ashonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl by Barry Lyga
This book has a really long title. I almost didn't read this one, but I'm glad I did. It turned out to be one of my favorite contemporary fiction novels.
2) The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan
Another drawing, long title. I was really set to read it when I found it was about zombies. I dislike Mary, protagonist, the most possibly of all my disliked characters. I found her to be very selfish and indecisive, which made her unlikable.

3) It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini
The title, again, drew me to this book. I ended up really liking it,and turned me on to the authors great autobiography, Teen Angst...Nah. I would really recommend reading either.
4) Bliss by Lauren Myracle
The title was written in blood on top of what looks like a sixties pageant queen. Of course I picked it up!


5) Vampirates: Demons of the Ocean by Justin Somper
Vampire pirates? Obviously a must read. The setting was a little young for me, but overall I enjoyed it.
6) Suck It Up by Brian Meehl
The cover got me. One of the best covers for a vampire book I've ever seen. The book wasn't bad either.
7) The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch
I picked this one up because of it's title. For whatever reason, I love reading books about fictionalized plagues and epidemics. However, this book basically had nothing to do with a plague. The book wasn't bad, in fact I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads, I was just disappointed that the title was so misleading.
8) Zombie Blondes by Brian James
Both the cover and title were a draw for me. I didn't care for the book very much, but it led me to discover the artist behind the cover. Sas Christian does some pretty impressive and creepy stuff. 
9) Plague by Jean Ure
One of the first post-apocalyptic books I ever read. This book sparked my interest in it's genre. 
10) The Carbon Diaries 2015 by Saci Lloyd

I originally read this one because of it's title, mostly because it was supposed to take place in the future. In the end though, I didn't really care for this one.
